Complete Guide to Performing Umrah in 2025: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i and Every Ritual Explained
Performing Umrah for the first time? This complete guide walks you through every step of Umrah — Ihram, Tawaf, Sa'i, and hair trimming — with practical tips for a spiritually fulfilling pilgrimage.
What Is Umrah?
Umrah is the lesser pilgrimage to Makkah (Mecca) that Muslims can perform at any time of the year, unlike Hajj which occurs during specific days of Dhul Hijjah. While Umrah is not obligatory (fard), it is a highly recommended Sunnah that carries immense spiritual reward. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "An Umrah to another Umrah is expiation for what is between them." (Bukhari and Muslim)
Umrah consists of four essential rituals: entering Ihram, performing Tawaf, performing Sa'i, and shaving or trimming the hair. This guide explains each one in detail.
Before You Travel: Spiritual and Practical Preparation
Approach Umrah as a spiritual journey, not a vacation. Before departing:
- Make sincere tawbah (repentance) — seek forgiveness from Allah and from those you may have wronged
- Settle debts — clear financial obligations before you go
- Learn the du'as — memorise or write the supplications for each ritual
- Pack appropriately — comfortable sandals (you will walk kilometres), unscented toiletries, a small du'a booklet
- Arrive rested — jet lag combined with physical exertion at the Haram is draining
Step 1: Entering Ihram — The State of Sacred Purity
Ihram is the sacred state that a pilgrim must enter before performing Umrah. It has two components: the physical garments and the spiritual intention (niyyah).
Ihram Garments
- Men: Two pieces of plain, unstitched white cloth — one wrapped around the waist (izar), one draped over the upper body (rida). No underwear. No head covering. Sandals that expose the top of the foot.
- Women: Any modest, non-form-fitting clothing that covers the entire body except the face and hands. Women do not have a specific colour requirement. They must not wear a face veil (niqab) or gloves while in Ihram.
Where to Enter Ihram
Ihram must be entered at or before the Miqat — the designated boundary point. There are five Miqat points corresponding to different directions of travel:
- Dhul Hulaifah — for those coming from Madinah
- Juhfah — for those coming from the direction of Syria/Egypt
- Qarn al-Manazil — for those from Najd/Gulf countries
- Yalamlam — for those from Yemen, Pakistan, India
- Dhat Irq — for those from Iraq
If arriving by plane, the airline will announce the Miqat crossing. Enter Ihram on the aircraft before the announcement, or at the airport before boarding if it is easier.
Making the Intention (Niyyah) and Talbiyah
After wearing Ihram garments, make the intention for Umrah: "Labbayk Allahumma Umrah" (Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah). Then begin reciting the Talbiyah continuously:
Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk. Labbayk la shareeka laka Labbayk. Innal hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk. La shareeka lak.
("Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Indeed all praise and grace is Yours, and all sovereignty. You have no partner.")
Continue reciting the Talbiyah until you begin Tawaf.
Ihram Prohibitions
While in Ihram, the following are prohibited: cutting hair or nails, using perfumed products, sexual relations, hunting animals, wearing stitched clothing (men), covering the head (men), covering the face (women).
Step 2: Tawaf — Circumambulating the Kaaba
Upon arriving at Masjid al-Haram, proceed to the Mataf (the marble area surrounding the Kaaba). Stop reciting the Talbiyah as you enter Tawaf.
How to Perform Tawaf
- Ensure you are in a state of wudu (ablution) — Tawaf is not valid without it
- Keep the Kaaba on your left throughout
- Begin at the Black Stone (Al-Hajar al-Aswad) — face it, say "Bismillah, Allahu Akbar," and if possible, touch or kiss it. If crowded (it usually is), simply raise your right hand toward it and say "Allahu Akbar" without pushing
- Complete seven circuits counter-clockwise around the Kaaba
- For the first three circuits (for men only), walk briskly with your chest pushed out — this is called Ramal
- Make du'a in your own language — this is one of the most blessed places to supplicate
After completing seven circuits, proceed to Maqam Ibrahim (the Station of Ibrahim) and pray two rak'ahs. Then drink Zamzam water.
Step 3: Sa'i — Walking Between Safa and Marwah
Sa'i commemorates the action of Hagar (Hajar), the wife of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), who ran between the hills of Safa and Marwah searching for water for her infant son Ismail.
How to Perform Sa'i
- Begin at the hill of Safa — face the Kaaba, raise your hands, and recite the Qur'anic verse: "Inna as-Safa wa al-Marwata min sha'a'irillah"
- Walk from Safa to Marwah — this is one lap. Safa to Marwah and back to Safa is two laps
- Complete seven laps total, ending at Marwah
- Men should run between the green fluorescent lights (a marked section); women walk at a normal pace
- Make du'a throughout
Sa'i does not require wudu, but it is preferable to maintain it.
Step 4: Halq or Taqsir — Shaving or Trimming the Hair
After completing Sa'i, men either shave their head completely (halq — more rewarding) or trim all of their hair significantly (taqsir). Women cut a fingertip's length from the ends of their hair — they do not shave.
After this step, the Ihram restrictions are lifted and Umrah is complete.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
- Timing: The Haram is least crowded between 2 AM and Fajr prayer. Perform Tawaf at these times if possible
- Footwear: Comfortable sandals are essential — you may walk 8–12 km between rituals and Tawaf
- Hydration: Drink Zamzam water frequently. It is available throughout the Haram
- Phone: Keep it away during rituals — be present
- Safety: Stay with your group. The Haram is vast and crowds can be disorienting
Conclusion
Umrah is a journey of the heart. The rituals are simple — the depth is in the intention and attention you bring to them. Prepare spiritually, arrive rested, follow each step with presence, and make du'a from the deepest part of your heart. May Allah accept your Umrah and grant you His forgiveness and mercy.
