Umrah Packing List 2025: Everything You Need to Take to Mecca
Packing correctly for Umrah can make or break your pilgrimage experience. This definitive 2025 packing list covers Ihram clothing, footwear, health essentials, electronics, and what NOT to bring.
Why Packing Right Transforms Your Umrah Experience
Umrah is physically and spiritually demanding. You will walk between 8 and 15 kilometres per day in crowds that can number in the hundreds of thousands. The temperature in Mecca regularly exceeds 40 degrees Celsius in summer months. You will perform Tawaf and Sa'i multiple times. Your body needs support to sustain the experience, and the wrong equipment — or forgotten essentials — can turn a sacred journey into a physically miserable one.
Pack with intention. Everything on this list has a specific purpose.
Ihram and Clothing
For Men
- 2 sets of Ihram: Two pieces of unstitched white cloth — one to wear, one spare. Buy before travelling as quality and fit vary at local shops.
- Ihram belt or safety pins: To secure the lower garment without stitching.
- 5 to 7 sets of regular clothing for outside of Ihram state.
- Light cotton underwear: Wear under Ihram for comfort and coverage.
- 1 warm layer: Masjid al-Haram is heavily air-conditioned and can be surprisingly cold, especially at night.
For Women
- Loose, modest, full-length clothing: Minimum 5 to 7 sets. Abayas are widely available in Mecca if needed.
- Multiple hijabs: Lightweight cotton or jersey — comfortable in the heat.
- Face should remain uncovered during Ihram state — note that niqab is not worn during Ihram for women.
- 1 warm cardigan or shawl for the cold Masjid interior.
Footwear — Critical
Footwear is one of the most important items for Umrah. Poor footwear causes blisters and foot pain that can incapacitate a pilgrim mid-ritual.
- Sandals with back straps: Men must wear sandals (no covered toes) during Ihram. Ensure they have a proper back strap — flat flip-flops cause severe blisters over 10+ km daily walks.
- Well-broken-in walking shoes: For outside Ihram state. Never bring new shoes — break them in at home over several weeks first.
- Blister plasters (Compeed): Pack 10 to 15. Blisters are extremely common and Compeed plasters are difficult to find locally.
- Insoles: Cushioned insoles significantly reduce foot and knee pain during extended walking.
- Moisture-wicking socks: For non-Ihram walking.
Health and Personal Care Essentials
- Meningitis vaccination certificate — mandatory for entry. Carry the original.
- Personal medications — bring more than you think you need. Replenishing specific medications in Mecca can be difficult.
- Electrolyte sachets or tablets (ORS): Dehydration is a serious risk. Carry these in your day bag at all times.
- Paracetamol and ibuprofen for headaches and pain from walking.
- Oral rehydration sachets.
- Antidiarrhoeal tablets (Imodium/Loperamide) — stomach issues are extremely common for pilgrims.
- Antihistamine cream and tablets — useful for insect bites and allergic reactions in crowded environments.
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ — apply before any outdoor activity.
- Lip balm with SPF — lips crack severely in desert heat.
- Small bottle of unscented moisturiser — skin dries rapidly in the desert climate (men must use unscented products during Ihram).
- Unscented soap, shampoo, and deodorant for during Ihram state.
- Toothbrush and miswak — both are recommended during pilgrimage.
- Umrah-specific first aid kit with plasters, antiseptic wipes, and gauze.
Documents and Money
- Original passport and multiple photocopies (store copies separately from originals).
- Printed and digital copies of your e-Visa, hotel booking, and flight tickets.
- Travel insurance documents.
- Emergency contact information written down — do not rely solely on your phone.
- Cash in Saudi Riyals — carry SAR 200 to 500 daily for meals, transport, and small purchases.
- International debit or credit card as backup — Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted.
Electronics and Practical Items
- Power bank (20,000mAh minimum): You will be away from charging points for hours at a time.
- Saudi Arabia power adapter — Type G (same as UK) sockets are standard.
- Small crossbody bag or belt pouch: Keep valuables secure in crowds. Never leave your phone or wallet in a pocket during Tawaf.
- Water bottle: Zamzam water is freely available throughout the Haram — bring a refillable bottle.
- Small backpack or day bag for carrying essentials during rituals.
- Tawaf counter (tasbih/tasbeeh): Physical counters are easier to use than phone apps during Tawaf.
- Folding umbrella or hat: For protection during outdoor portions of Sa'i and travelling between sites.
- Ear plugs: Hotels in Mecca can be noisy. Good sleep is essential for maintaining energy across multiple days.
- Small combination lock for hotel safe and luggage.
What NOT to Bring
- Scented products of any kind during Ihram — deodorant, perfume, scented lotion. Use only unscented alternatives.
- Immodest or tight clothing — full modest dress is required at all times.
- Excessive jewellery — keep valuables at home or securely locked in your hotel.
- Non-halal food or alcohol — these are prohibited in Saudi Arabia and will be confiscated at customs.
- Large amounts of cash — use cards and carry only daily spending cash on your person.
- Heavy luggage — you will need to move between hotel, Masjid al-Haram, and transportation frequently. Lightweight, well-packed bags make this significantly easier.
